As the December print issue of McKnight’s Senior Living rolled off the presses, we were thrilled to see that our customer Provision Living took home the silver medal in the ‘Quality’ category of the Senior Living track of the 2020 McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards. The community grabbed the attention of the judges with their investment in innovative technologies that drive proactive care.
Historically, there has been no solution in place that tells caregivers when a crisis is about to happen. That means that care is often reactive, responding after a fall or emergency event has already happened. By then it’s often too late: a resident is on their way to the hospital and they may never return to the community. Provision Living was able to break this cycle, focusing on proactive care standards for fall prevention and health monitoring. How? Using predictive data.
Cathy Krege, Director of Clinical Services and Compliance at Provision Living, describes quality care as proactive, immediate care. To enhance these standards within the community, Provision Living partnered with STANLEY Healthcare in 2018 to implement Foresite, an AI technology to reduce falls and prevent hospitalizations. This solution passively collects resident health data and utilizes artificial intelligence to supply caregivers with the information they need for timely interventions in resident care. Predictive data is collected and analyzed from a HIPAA-compliant depth sensor and utilizes 19 years of clinical research to provide care suggestions based on each resident’s health trends.
Provision’s award submission highlighted the challenges the industry is facing to maintain resident wellness throughout the COVID-19 era. With Foresite, the community has been able to avoid emergency room visits and hospitalizations – and the associated exposure and risk. But COVID-19 is not the community’s only concern. Provision Living also receives alerts to potential UTIs, cardiac events and more to enable treatment before an emergency escalates. For the first time, care has become truly proactive.
Provision Living was able to use this specific data to fundamentally change the trajectory of a resident’s experience within their community: Provision Living caregivers received an alert from their Foresite system that flagged declining walking speed based on the resident’s Timed Up and Go (TUG) score, indicating an increased fall risk. The team sprang into action. Through engaging with the physician, physical therapy team, family and the resident, they prevented a future fall and eliminated the potential downward spiral for this resident.
According to Krege, caregivers are the heart and soul of caring; something technology could never replace. Instead, technology enhances this care. Before Provision Living implemented Foresite, caregivers were spending a lot of time trying to figure out what was wrong, taking away the quality time spent with residents. With Foresite the time equation has flipped, allowing caregivers to spend more time doing what they need to do: providing quality care. This proactive and informed approach to resident caring is a true differentiator that sets Provision Living apart from other organizations.
